Latency arbitrage is often described as speed.
That is only half true.
Speed is common. Clean traders can be fast. Good infrastructure is fast. A well-built algorithm can react quickly without exploiting anyone. If a broker treats speed by itself as guilt, the risk team will punish legitimate flow and lose trust in its own tools.
Latency arbitrage forensics starts somewhere stricter. It asks whether the trade path contains a repeated profitable contradiction: the trader, broker, market tick stream, and fill record briefly disagreed about what “now” meant, and that disagreement kept resolving in the trader’s favour.
That is the difference between a fast trader and a latency abuser.
The Problem With Ordinary Latency Reports
Most latency reports show fast accounts. They rank by average execution speed, response time, or profitability after short holding periods. Those are useful context signals, but they are not proof.
A fast account may be clean. A profitable account may be skilled. A short holding period may be a strategy choice. Even a favourable markout can happen by chance when the market is moving.
The forensic question is narrower:
Did the trader repeatedly request or receive a price that was favourable versus the next real market tick, inside a timing window the broker’s execution path allowed?
If the answer is no, speed is just speed.
If the answer is yes, the broker is no longer looking at a performance style. The broker is looking at a repeatable infrastructure exploit.
Four Realities Behind Every Latency Case
The strongest latency analysis separates four realities.
Trader reality is the price the trader appears to have acted on. In PNLFACTORY terms, this includes the requested price carried into the order path.
Broker execution reality is the time and quote surface the broker records while accepting and filling the order.
Market tick reality is the independent tick stream before, at, and after the broker execution anchor.
Fill reality is the price the trader actually received.
Latency arbitrage appears when those realities briefly disagree in a way that should not keep favouring the same account. One isolated disagreement can be noise. A repeated pattern becomes evidence.
This is the core idea behind the next generation of PNLFACTORY latency detection: do not convict on speed alone. Look for profitable contradictions between independent clocks and prices.
What Forensic Evidence Looks Like
A strong latency case usually has several layers.
First, there is a price edge. The trader’s requested price or the broker’s quote surface is favourable compared with the next real market tick. For a buy, the trader is effectively asking below where the next ask already moved. For a sell, the trader is effectively asking above where the next bid already moved.
Second, there is a timing window. The broker execution time and market tick time show a gap large enough for that edge to matter. The account is not merely fast; it is repeatedly landing inside the same exploitable boundary.
Third, the pattern repeats. A single strange trade is not enough. The risk team needs enough examples across deals, symbols, or sessions to rule out coincidence.
Fourth, post-fill behaviour supports the story. Markouts at one second, five seconds, or sixty seconds may show that the market path continued in the trader’s favour. This is confirmation, not the main proof. Markets move after trades all the time. Confirmation only matters when the core contradiction already exists.
Why PNL Is Not Enough
The most dangerous latency accounts often look excellent in ordinary reports.
They have high volume. They produce smooth profits. They may have low complaint rates. They can look like VIP clients because their behaviour is efficient and professional.
PNL tells the broker who won. It does not explain how they won.
Latency arbitrage forensics explains the mechanism. It shows whether the account’s edge came from market skill or from repeatedly capturing stale broker reality before the platform caught up with market reality.
That distinction matters operationally. A skilled trader might be routed differently. A latency abuser may require restriction, execution-rule review, bridge investigation, or liquidity-provider negotiation. The evidence path must be defensible enough for the action.
What PNLFACTORY Adds
PNLFACTORY is built to turn raw execution evidence into risk intelligence. The Latency module does not exist to shout “fast.” It exists to separate clean speed from toxic timing advantage.
The useful output is not just a score. It is a verdict backed by explainable evidence:
- which accounts repeatedly landed inside suspicious timing windows;
- which trades carried a favourable price edge versus the next tick;
- whether post-fill markouts confirmed or weakened the hypothesis;
- whether the pattern repeated enough to become operationally meaningful.
That gives a chief dealer something stronger than suspicion. It gives them a structured forensic file.
The Broker’s Test
A practical latency arbitrage review should answer five questions:
- Was the account merely fast, or did speed align with a favourable price contradiction?
- Did the contradiction appear across enough trades to matter?
- Did market ticks after the fill support the same direction?
- Could the pattern be explained by data gaps, clock issues, symbol metadata, or execution mode?
- What action is justified by the evidence?
If a tool cannot answer those questions, it is not doing latency arbitrage forensics. It is only sorting by speed.
Latency arbitrage is not the presence of speed. It is the repeated capture of a time-path contradiction.
That is why the right evidence must compare trader reality, broker reality, market tick reality, and fill reality. The abuse lives in the gap between them.
